Shootin Iron

Shootin Iron is a fast playing miniature game designed for quick pick-up games or tournament play.  The complete, yet concise, rules for this game are printed on a single, two sided, sheet of paper designed to be laminated for easy use and reference during play.

The design goal was to take in all the trappings necessary for a fun and tactical cinematic Wild West shootout, and then streamline those essentials into the simplest form possible, without losing any of the strategy.

While the standard game is designed for 2 players with a posse of 6 miniatures each on a 3’ x 3’ table, this is simply a standard for tournament style play.  Shootin Iron has been played seamlessly with much larger groups of miniatures and players on a much larger game surface.

All the old gazette stuff was expanded, revised, and incorporated into the current version of the rules.

Just a note. On this date, Shootin Iron has been revised and expanded to a second edition! The new version is easier, faster, more streamlined, and more fun to play. It also adds a lot more optional rules to give each and every game more variety and excitement.

The first two pages contain all the core game rules, and are still designed to be copied (and laminated if you like) to act as a handy reference when playing the game.

The rest of the pages contain rules for special characters, townsfolk, and legends of the old west you can add to your game. These are followed by several unique scenarios you can play if you want a change from the traditional shootout.

I hope you all enjoy!

Hi David,

I'm currently putting stuff together to have some quick games, and I'm a bit confused about the ammo rules with bows and throwing weapons; how do they "reload"?
Would it make more sense to have them never run out of ammo? Since they activate last it could give them a unique edge in the game.

Cheers!

OMG, sorry I never saw this question...and it's a good one. To keep the game quick and simple we have always assumed that the (thrown/bow) attacker has enough arrows and a couple spare weapons. It is also unspoken that during the battle they are retrieving thrown weapons and plucking arrows out of carcasses as they pass by. "Out of ammo" would just assume there is a further complication...like they have to run a little further to grab that spear, or the next handy arrow is lodged firmly in a femur. Sorry for the long delay in an ("official") answer, but hopefully this will help other players.

Thank you, glad you are enjoying the game . I have more notes and tidbits on my desktop than I can keep track of, but I’ve been on a bit of a publishing hiatus while doing other things. But do not fear, soon I will get back in the groove. I generally send out a discount promo to anyone who has purchased my other stuff, so if you purchased the core rules, you’ll undoubtedly get an email when something new comes out.

David...I have been working on/playtesting an 'enhanced' version of 'Going Through The Mill' to give the game more legs in campaign mode. I really enjoy the rules, so if/when you have time I can share my notes with you to see if you have any need for them.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
