Command at Sea, 4th edition, 2nd printing

Ausgewählte Option:

Command at Sea (CaS) is an award-winning World War II tactical naval rules set. It can simulate almost every naval operation of  World War II with accurate and consistent results. Victory depends as much on the tactics and planning of the players as on the ships and equipment under their command.

CaS emphasizes technical and historical accuracy using a streamlined, easy to follow rules structure that keeps the action fast-paced and fun. Combat resolution is built around a single die roll philosophy that keeps the players focused on the battle and not on the mechanics of the rules.

Command at Sea allows the player to experience the kind of decisions that a ship or battle group commander must make when he fights a sea battle during World War II. Victory depends on making the right decision at the right time. CaS is more than just a game, it is an accurate simulation. The models that make up the heart of CaS are based on historical technical data and extensive operational analysis. Tactics that were successful in actual battles will also work in CaS.

Some key points about the CaS game system are:

            • Detailed but simple gunnery system

            • Elegant torpedo rules including a lead angle solver

            • Accurate armor model including torpedo protection systems

            • Realistic damage results with varying degrees of severity for fire and  flooding

            • Historically accurate modeling of sensors (radar, HFDF, sonar & visual)

            • Innovative aircraft rules which facilitate rapid resolution of mass air attacks

            • Unique methodology for conducting depth charge attacks

            • Sidebars which provide historical background and a description of some of the matematical models used to calculate game values.

Our goal in designing Command at Sea was to make World War II naval combat as exciting and fast as possible, but without compromising historical accuracy or losing the tactical "feel" of the game. We believe we did just that, but we invite you the players to "assume the watch" and judge for yourselves just how well we hit the target.

This edition has been updated to include rule changes that appeared in Issue #53 (October 2017), including collision damage, overconcentration, illumination for gunfire, and point-blank gunfire.

Can you print the rule book at your local print shop? I seem to have a issue with this as the shop gets an error every time we try to print it. Had no issues pinting the "CAS players handbook". Thanks.

Aside from that, great stuff!

FYI, you can find the CAS "Jump Start" booklet (PDF) at the Admiralty site.

I´ll answer myself...

Best not to use any download manager type app. Re-downloaded the PDF file without the app and I was then able to print it, so all good.

I recently purchased the rules, and I've noted that the rules reference a Jump Start booklet. Is this available? (I have the boxed Harpoon 4 set, and the jump start is very handy in quickly learning how to apply the rules..)

I'm wondering, with these rules can you play a game with just this book or do I have to buy other expansions to play this? Also, how much room is needed to play this game? I can't find any game tutorials on this game. I would like to know more about this game before I buy as most sea games are very hard to learn and get up and playing

Steve,

I asked this same question back in 2015 (see the posts below). Bottom line, you need, at a minimum, the core rules, two or more "fleet books" unless you want to conduct hypothetical blue v. blue engagements and at least one scenario book unless you want to make up your own.

Regards,

Scott Chisholm

Thank for the reply. Most sea miniatures are very complicated and it sounds like this is no different. I don't want to spend a bunch of money to get a game no one will play because of its complexity. I think I'm going to pass on this one.

Is the ship data from earlier versions of the rules usable? I have Rising Sun. Maybe 2nd edition?

I am a bit confused with the organization of the modules for Command at Sea. I have purchased the core rules and now realize there is no ship information or scenarios included in them.

If I wanted to explore the USN-IJN campaign what supplements would I need to purchase? It looks like I'd need Rising Sun and Steel Typhoon, but would I also need to purchase Rising Sun Form 10s, American Fleets and Emperor's Fleet in order to play a game?

Also, when will Fear God and Dread Naught become available?

The minimum you need would be American Fleets and Emperor's Fleet, which are the data books, the other two are very useful scenario books. Fear God and Dreadnaught is being redesigned to be compatible with the other Trilogy titles and will come out next year.

Are the files of Command at Sea, including the modules and scenario books, available here at Wargamevault containing files of cardboard counters for DIY?

The core rules do not have any data sheets, scenarios or counters - just the rules.
