A Call to Arms: Star Fleet, Book One, Revision Two, Deluxe Edition

Auf die Wunschliste >

Your Mission:

Go Boldly to the Stars

Discover New Worlds

Bring Your Crew Home Alive

A Call to Arms: Star Fleet is a game of space combat in the Star Fleet Universe. Throughout humanity’s space-age history the United Federation of Planets has explored the octant of space it is in, but has come under pressure from enemies who sometimes became friends. Other times, it was war! Now you can play out these confrontations on your tabletop with fleets from the Federation, Klingon Empire, Romulan Empire, or one of many other empires (including pirates!) found in the Alpha Octant.

From skirmishes with a few destroyers to clashes between large fleets, A Call to Arms: Star Fleet is what you need to make your own history and test your own skills. Choose from Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Kzinti, Gorn, Tholian, and Orion pirate ships. You can protect convoys of civilian shipping. Choose to fight one of the included scenarios or create your own. You can even run a campaign.

In this revised edition all of the rules have been reviewed, clarified as needed, and are in one location. All of the ships have had their stats reviewed. There has been extensive playtesting of this version. You will find that the ease of play has been retained so large battles can be handled quickly. The deluxe version includes expanded background information for the empires, a chapter on tactics, a chapter on painting ships and creating asteroids, and far more art. Each ship roster includes an image of the ship.

Go forth and wage war!

Are there rules to build your own ships or are there only pre-designed ships? Just curious if we want to build up to some of the DS9 ships and such.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for the quick response. I have nothing against miniatures but lacking money and storage space (plus not great painting skills) prevents me from doing so. So counters will be more useful for now. So I guess my real question is what FC counter sets should I get to match the ships in the game?

That's an even more difficult question.

When we developed the game, we 'borrowed' units from both the core sets and all of the expansions.
Since the game was a miniatures game, we felt no need to constrain our ship selection to a specific module.
That means that there are ships in the game that come from ALL the Fed Comm sets.

Without running the numbers, I'd guess that Klingon Border and Romulan Border would cover 75% of the ships. Klingon Attack and Romulan Attack gives you counters for another 20%. But for the Orion Ships and the Tholian ships (3 of each), you'll need both Tholian Attack and Orion Attack.

And that's just Book 1.
When you get to Book 2, there's another 125 ships
And Reinforcements Book 1 adds in another 105.

Hi Tony,

Thanks again. That is kind of what I thought regards to counters once i found a list of the ships in the game and matched them to what is included in various FC product.
Didn't know about the reinforcement book, i'll look that one up.

Neal.
ACTASF is a miniatures game. It is designed to use miniatures, not counters.

That being said, with a bit of effort - one can use counters. Our play test group frequently uses counters for those empires / units that have not yet had miniatures produced.
If you choose to use counters [but why? Minis are so much flashier! 8^) ] the ships in book 1.2 are all included in Federation Commander. Later Books may introduce some units / empires not included in FC yet - but in those cases, one could simply substitute other counters.
For example, the upcoming Reinforcements Book 1 introduces X-ships. These are not in FC yet (but will be when X-Ships Attacks is released). Until they are added ,there's nothing stopping you from using a Heavy Cruiser counter as an X-Cruiser (as long as both players know which counter is representing which ship).

Are the ships included the same as Federation Commander? My space is limited and I would use counters to play so wondering which counters to get.

Evidently there was an email sent out to upgrade my purchase a while back, but I haven't seen it. I picked up the hardcover at Gen Con a few years back of the first printing. I got book one revision two, but I'm not sure I can see spending full price fo a system that I've already invested in twice. Star Fleet Battles, Federation and Empire, and Star Fleet Commander player; all the way back to the pocket edition.

I'm guessing the offer to purchase for the difference for previous customers is long past. I just assumed my existing purchase/file would be updated as it had been while you were working on it. I haven't had a chance to game for a few months and find out a whole new version came out separately. I checked my email and sure enough I have an email for the 'difference' offer but clicking on it takes me to a full price purchase link. Oh well. I would buy it at the difference for completeness but since I have boxes full of SFB going back to Expansion #1/#2 days. I think I know the background well enough. lol. I guess I need to watch my email closer. (Oh, apparently I got it over on wargame vault as thats where my email sent me).

Addendum to my prior review. Publisher's website has a consolidated combat table with summary of weapon information.

Is the only difference between this version of the rules and "A Call to Arms: Star Fleet, Book One, Revision Two (non deluxe)" the 40 or so pages of setting/empire fluff?

I'm a big lover of the setting but not sure if I want to pay 30 bucks all over again for the expanded setting info.

Did you get an email notice from Wargamevault? There should have been a link to get it at a discount for the difference you paid.

In fact later that same day I did get an email from ADB with a coupon to purchase it for the 10$ difference. Thank you ADB.

So for those who have purchased the non deluxe version but haven't received an email I'm pretty sure if you contact ADB they'd hook you up.
