English Civil War Paper Battles

This is a set of PDF files for printing and constructing paper stand up figures and scenery for fighting tabletop battles of the English Civil War. It is provided as a collection of counters and scenery - how you choose to use the various parts in your games is left entirely up to you.

This is a large set - the download is divided into 3 separate Zip files totalling over 100 MBs and includes a variety of:

* dragoons
* generals
* foote including various musket & pike types
* horse including light and heavy types
* artillery including light, medium and heavy guns
* casualties
* rural buildings
* hedges & trees
* roads and streams

Parliam

The figures and terrain are highly stylised and to no particular scale. Individual figure height varies from unit to unit - the only constant is a base size of 60mm by 40mm for the fighting units. The viewing perspective also varies from unit to unit and both sides of the counters carry an identical image. This is mainly for aesthetic reasons - the excess blank paper can be neatly trimmed from each counter, which enhances the look of the game considerably.

The facing of the counter is shown by a pattern of chevrons on the unit front and by a solid block of colour on the units rear with a brief identifying label such as "Muskets" or "Pike".

In general the troops depicted can be used for either side in the conflict and any labels I have assigned to them are for identifying purposes only.

It is intended that this set be used (with some imagination and adaptation) with any set of wargaming rules that is element based.

Excellent product! We used these paper miniatures to stage a very large ECW battle at a local con, and it attracted quite a number of spectators. We also won a trophy for the game from the game organizers, exactly because it has a total different visua [...]

These are the best paper models I have ever found for wargaming. They work well with warlord games pike and shotte, victory without quarter, father tilly 4 and WECW (the nifty casualty markers mean you don't need figure removal with these two rulesets) [...]

THESE ECW PAPER FIGURES ARE SUPERB - ARMIES PRINTED IN MINUTES - I HAVE PRINTED THEM SMALLER TO ALLOW FOR LARGE BATTLES TO BE FOUGHT AND THE QUALITY OF PRINTING IS STILL THERE. JUST LIKE THE ENGRAVING OF THE BATTLE OF NASEBY. PLUS THE SCENERY AS WELL! [...]

These paper miniatures are stunning! The illustrations are gorgeous and invoke the feel of the period brilliantly. You really do get a lot for your money, especially when you take into account the ease of construction and the variety of troops included [...]

This set goes above and beyond. The list of what you get shown in the description does not do justice to what you actually get. In the Foot file alone you get: Clubmen, Forlorn Hope, Early Musketeers, Later Musketeers, New Model Army Musketeers [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
