Polemos Ruse de Guerre
by charles l. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/02/2017 15:41:01

This is not a review but a comment of how I felt about the rules. They are very "choppy" and difficult to follow. There may be a good game here, but I am looking for something where I do not have to work at trying to figure out what the designer is talking about. Though there are diagrams they do little to adequately explain the situations being covered.

The cost was not a total waste since the scenarios are usable.

I was going to give it 2 stars, but went with 3 since I had not played it, but only read the rules.

Polemos SPQR
by Stuart T. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/21/2012 13:43:43

Whilst not bad for the price (I got my copy for $11) SPQR has the look of a somewhat unpolished product.

I've read through several times now and still do not really understand the order system or how it works - as the core of the system this should be made very clear but there is not so much as an example of issuing orders and what effect that would have on play, the orders section really needs expanding and several examples adding. The interaction between general and other officers is also unclear - how do officers use their points and how does it differ from the generals command pips?

The combat section is clear, and has some unusual mechanics (including charges being initially treated as ranged combat) which I have yet to try on the table.

Several army lists and scenarios are included and this part of the book seems well done and thought out.

It's worth noting that there is a very active yahoo group which covers these rules too.

In summary, if you are willing to put the work in on the yahoo group getting the rest of the rules down (they don't appear to be in the book) then this might be a good set of rules.

Polemos Franco Prussian War
by Scott M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/29/2011 11:32:37

A group of players in our club got together to play Kommandant der Armee (the army level version of the game) for the first time yesterday and everyone was pleased with the results. I found that the tempo system of movement worked well and simulated the initiative (or lack thereof) of the opposing military systems and the ebb and flow of the battlefield. In the end the game felt like a battle of the period.

We played a game with about 1 1/2 Corps on each side to the point that the outcome was becoming obvious in about 3 hours. And we were learning the game and constantly looking things up while playing, so it played briskly.

We are planning to play again soon, and people are excited that many of the painted armies that we have that have been sitting idle for lack of a suitable game will be seeing action again.

Polemos English Civil War
by Gregory K. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/30/2010 01:23:21

Still an innovative approach to wargaming and the English Civil War. Designed for large scale battles, this game does not concern itself with tactical minutiae.
