The book is great to look at with lots of eye candy - full colour pictures of what seems to be British forces in the Afghan and beautifully painted miniatures in some impressive terrain.

How does it play?

Firstly I must say theyre great.

We have now played this all weekend. So I think I have got the system down and it really works well. We began playing a single fire team against our insurgent bad guys but soon moved up to a squad and then two squads as we became more and more familiar with the rules.

The rules themselves work on 1d100 percentile system so there is no need to roll buckets of dice and the granulation of the rules are good without becoming overly tiresome. We quickly began to remember the +/-‘s for spotting and shooting, so only occasionally had to refer to charts when something a bit different happened.

The idea of off table assets really works well, with ISAF (non-insurgent western forces i.e. USA and UK to the uninitiated like me) forces being able to call in mortar/air strikes and snipers as well as a host of other elements but be warned not every call gets answered so if you put too many points into off table resources it can come back to bite you. The Taliban have their own off table resources, which are equally effective as well as access to suicide bombers and IEDs.

In many modern games the insurgents are casually mown down, I am thinking here of the likes of FoF but in Sangin the Taliban are a difficult enemy to beat, even though they often field sub standard forces. RPGs and heavy weapons can be very lethal even to troops wearing body armour.

We haven’t yet played with the vehicle rules, but having read them through a few times they seem to fit neatly into the system and would add a fun element to larger games. And that’s a good point to emphasis when I brought the rules I thought I would only be playing with a squad or two at a time, but if you have four players or two players who know the rules, well I am sure this can expand to platoon size games. We have a big game planned for the weekend and I can’t wait. Most games last 2 hours, single squads games can be over in less time, great when you under time pressure. In our first gaming session we managed to squeeze in 3 starter games, each one bigger than the last and we where still learning the rules.

While there is the odd typo and we did have to ask one or two questions about the rules these were answered overnight on the yahoo forum. Radio Dishdash are providing free additional resources on their website. I would recommend the combat phase tracker as it makes the game so much easier to run.

Overall I am really happy with the rules, they do what they say on the box and I think they will offer a whole lot more besides.
