Printing Floor Plans at One-Inch Squares:
Any art program will work. This example prints a floor plan using Windows ? Paint.
  1. Load the desired floor plan from the 5021_castle_keeps/images folder.
  2. Marquee select an area 7 squares wide by 10 squares high.
  3. Select Copy from Paint's Edit menu.
  4. Select New from Paint's File menu. Do not save the original image.
  5. Paste the copied selection.
  6. Select Page Setup from Paint's File menu and perform steps 7-9.
  7. Change the page margins: right and left to .75", top and bottom to .5".
  8. Ensure Orientation is Portrait.
  9. Set Scaling to "Fit 1 by 1 Page" and press Okay.
  10. Print the floor plan.
Grimbarith Keep:
The "crown of the hill", Grimbarith is a compact and functional keep standing upon a high prominence.
  • Detailed in seven floorplans.
  • Contains 130 concisely described areas, rooms and buildings.
  • Consists of two round towers, one elongated tower, one small rectangular tower, two catapult landings, a small gatehouse, a large rectangular tower main keep, four sections of curtain wall, fifteen bailey buildings and an exterior ramp leading up to the gatehouse.
Halestrom Castle:
The "castle upon the lake", Halestrom is an enormous and mighty bastion capable of housing, or defending against, an army.
  • Detailed in five floorplans.
  • Contains 137 concisely described areas, rooms and buildings.
  • Consists of four octagonal towers, four interior compartments, one large rectangular tower, one medium rectangular tower, four small rectangular staircase towers, a great gatehouse, a large gatehouse, eight sections of curtain wall, ten bailey buildings, a wide, filled moat, an exterior causeway with a small gate, and an interim landing in front of the great gatehouse.

Roshefain Keep:
  • Detailed in five floorplans.
  • Contains 44 concisely described areas, rooms and buildings.
  • Consists of two small rectangular towers, a medium rectangular tower main keep, a small rounded tower, four sections of curtain wall, four bailey buildings and an exterior barbican leading to the gateway.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
