Battleship Command - WWII Naval Wargame Rules

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The game of Battleship Commandallows players to take on the role of Second World war admirals commanding squadrons and fleets in the many theatres of the war at sea.

The rules are designed for players to command fleets of one to 10 ships however larger actions can be fought if players wish. The rules are intended to be fast to play allowing an action to be fought to a conclusion within a few hours of play.

Battleship Command also includes a new command and control system where the quality of the officers under your command can have a major impact on the game.

The rulebook includes all the rules needed to play, generic and historical scenarios as well as ship and aircraft data for the British Royal Navy, the Kreigsmarine, French Navy, Regia Marina, US Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy.

Some issues with section 22 or Fleet Lists. To be fair, these have to do with the non-surface combat part of the rules.

1. There are no B5N Kates flights listed on any of the Japanese aircraft carriers.
2. Not an expert but I believe there are no Japanese CVL's listed.
3. The B5N Kate and the G4M Betty anti-ship armament tables do not include torpedo's.

Hope to try these out soon!

I have two questions that I hope I can get help with.
1. Can someone explain how to determine the Range Band. My understanding is take the range to target, divide by the number based on class of gun, and that number gives the range band? So if my target is 36" away and I am firing a class D gun, my range band is 6? So the max range for any gun is 36"?
2. I looked at a couple of other games for Battle of the River Platt and the Exeter is listed as having 8" guns. But here, they are only listed as 6" guns and it has virtually the same stats as the light cruisers Ajax and Achilles. Is this correct or should the Exeter being, a Heavy Cruiser, be more beefier and have more punch?

Update. Since I couldn't reach the author of these rules here or on their website because I had other questions as well, I went ahead and purchased Naval Thunder and got both books, Battleship Row and Bitter Rivals and I'm much happier with those rules. I'm not posting this in anger, but sharing it out to anyone interested in these rules but aren't sure if you should get them, you might want to wait until the author does an update or two.

I made contact with that author on Facebook. He is going to update the PDF for Exeter. He clarified the range bands as simply dividing the range by the amount for the gun class. That could give a range band result higher than the chart listed in the book which could make a target impossible to hit. This helps keep the game on a 6x4 table as designed. With clarifications and response, I'm ready to give this one a try. Thanks Rory.

I just finished reading the rules and one thing that is immediately jumping out at me is there seems to be no special treatment of Japanese torpedoes. Did I miss them being discussed someplace?

Given these where a major naval innovation that where instrumental in many of the IJAs early victories at Guadalcanal, I think they deserve additional treatment in the rules for their extended range and damage potential.

Ah, too bad. I'm very interested in this topic (Guadalcanal) and looking for games that recreate the fightings. Then I'll wait with buying and hope one day the Long Lance Torpedos find their mark.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
